Grandparents

Photo: Scott and Pépère
Location: Our Kitchen

At long last, Mem and Pep arrived to Apex on Tuesday. They had an easy flight up from Tampa, and I took them home to unpack and wait for Scott to arrive home from work. On Wednesday we went to the State Farmers Market in Raleigh and bought a lot of delicious fruits and vegetables. It was lovely. On Thursday morning Pep taught Scott how to make crépes. They were a childhood favorite and when the French chef arrives, you'd better take advantage. They looked delicious. Like lace doilies, but tastier.

Pep has a bit of a reputation in the family for working a little too hard, and there is no way to stop him. We all tease him. I am sure the family members that are reading this right now are already laughing to themselves. That said, he makes the most delicious pies, and... well everything really! He insisted on raking our yard, and our neighbor gave me a hard time. He wanted to paint the picnic table too, but I managed to get him to sit down and relax after the raking was done.

Location: Duke Chapel

Thursday the weather was perfect and we drove all over the triangle. One stop was Duke Chapel, which is a rather impressive cathedral. I wish I could have taken them to mass while they were here, but they boarded their plane about three hours too early. Oh well, next time.

Location: A Southern Season

While we were out and about, we went to Chapel Hill to look at the UNC campus, and to go to A Southern Season. They have every niche high-end food item and food prep tool one could hope for. I picked up some fancy hot chocolate, goat cheese, and French truffles. Uncle Ray will be getting a surprise from Southern Season that Pep picked up when they head back to Maine, which Scott and I want pictures of.

Friday we were rained in, so I baked apple pie, and Pep and Scott worked on genealogy for hours. Em and AJ stopped in to eat pie with us shortly after Em lost her shoes in the mud. Today we "chilled out", as Mem likes to say, while they packed up and got ready for the airport. We were sad to see them go, because there is nothing like Grandparents coming to visit. Hopefully they'll come and see us again. To see all of the photos, click here.

PS - The cat warmed up to them pretty fast for him, and spent a long time rubbing their legs and chatting their ears off.

A couple extra anecdotes ...

- Pepere was accidentally locked out of the house on the first morning. He had gone out for a walk between the time I had come downstairs to setup the coffee machine (& feed the cat) and then came back down to head out for work. I thought it was peculiar that the coffee was already brewed and the kitchen blinds were up, but didn't entertain the thought that Pep was out and about for a walk. Instinctively, I locked the door on the way out. A phone call from Alice a few hours later explained everything ;-). Poor Pep had to call up to Memere on the second floor guest room where they were staying to wake her up and let him back in. Luckily, they slept with the window cracked open that night. We gave him a spare key at that point.

- Another moment of pure pleasure was listening to Memere discuss her theater excursions, most notably that of 'The Full Monty' and Pepere describing just how red her face was when she came home that night.

It was an enjoyable visit. We made crepes, went for walks, did some genealogy, discussed old times, and put Pep to work.
